Lecture Award

Purpose:

To acknowledge and honor a member of the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy for excellence and leadership in acute care physical therapy practice and for distinguished contributions to the Academy; to provide the recipient with an opportunity to share his/her achievements and ideas with the Academy membership through a lecture presented at the annual Combined Sections Meeting; and to provide a touchstone for the profession in assessing the role and value of acute care physical therapy.

Criteria for recipient eligibility shall be:

  1. A current member of the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy
  2. One who has demonstrated excellence, expertise and leadership in the areas of patient care, administration, education, or research relating to acute care physical therapy
  3. One who has demonstrated contributions to the Academy

Procedure for Nomination:

  1. Nominations may be submitted by individuals and components of the Academy.
  2. The application deadline is November 1 of each year.
  3. Only electronic submission of nominations will be accepted. Complete the form below.
  4. The materials submitted for each nomination shall include:
    1. Nomination form
    2. Current curriculum vitae or resume. 
    3. A minimum of three (3) letters of support, at least one of which must come from an Academy member, which focus on the strengths of the nominee in relation to the award criteria. All letters must include contact information of the writer (name, title, address, phone, email) to allow verification of authorship.
  5. Individuals nominated and not selected for the award may be nominated in any subsequent year by completion and submission of a current nomination form and supporting documents. Previously submitted materials will not be used.
  6. Current members of the Membership and Education Committees, being responsible for reviewing nominations and recommending a recipient, and current members of the Academy's Executive Committee, being responsible for the final selection of the awardee, are not eligible for the award during their term of office and shall not nominate, write letters of support, or endorse the individuals for the award.

Procedures for Review:

  1. Effect on the shape, scope, and quality of acute care physical therapy practice
  2. Quality and quantity of contributions to the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy
  3. Quality and quantity of contributions to the Academy
  4. General esteem in which the nominee is held by peers, as judged by favorable comments in the letters of support and sources of the comments
  5. Ability to present a noteworthy lecture; acknowledged skills in the organization and presentation of written and/or oral communications, as documented in the letters of support and the nominee’s curriculum vitae

Procedures for Review:

  1. The Membership and Education Committees of the Academy will review the nominations and recommend a recipient to the Executive Committee no later than December 15 of each year. The Executive Committee will give final approval by January 15 of the year prior to the CSM at which the recipient will be giving the lecture.
  2. The decision of the Executive Committee pertaining to the selection of the recipient will be final and reasons for the decision will not be disclosed.

Notification of Award:

  1. The President of the Academy will notify the awardee and will obtain written confirmation of acceptance from the awardee.
  2. The name of the awardee will be kept confidential until announced at the CSM following the selection, which is one year before the awardee is to present his/her lecture.
  3. The responsibilities of the individual receiving the award will be written in a letter and mailed to the individual following the CSM at which the individual is announced as the next lecturer.
  4. After the announcement of the award recipient at CSM, the nominators of individuals not selected will receive a letter thanking them for their participation.

Nature of the Award:

  1. The lecture will be presented at the CSM following the announcement of the awardee and should be 45 minutes in length.
  2. The title of the lecture, if the awardee chooses to have a title in addition to “The xxxth Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy Lecture,” will be left to the discretion of the awardee.
  3. The specific lecture topic will be the decision of the awardee, keeping in mind the purpose of the award.
  4. A written copy of the lecture will be submitted for publication in the issue of the Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy that immediately follows the lecture. An appropriate announcement of the award recipient and his/her accomplishments will also appear in Critical EdgEmail. The award recipient will also be listed on the Academy's website.

Nature of the Award:

On the occasion of the presentation of the lecture, the awardee will be presented a plaque and a framed certificate of recognition by the Academy President. The awardee will also receive an honorarium of $250.
