The Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy (AACPT) is excited to announce its newest resource, "Competency: Laboratory Values Interpretation Resource." In 2017, the AACPT distributed an updated Laboratory Values Interpretation Resource to all physical therapy practitioners to better reflect current trends in practice. In addition, a Point-of-Care Documentwas developed to improve usability in the busy acute care setting. The documents were established to assist clinicians with their clinical decision making, provide excellent care, and adhere to high standards. These and more can be found on the AACPT Resource Guides page.

Recognizing each clinician’s experience and education may vary, a task force of the AACPT Practice Committee spent the last nine months creating a Laboratory Values Interpretation Resource Competency to close skill gaps and raise the bar on performance. This new competency allows the clinician to utilize the Laboratory Values Resource Point-of-Care Document to clinically reason scenarios that physical therapists may encounter with a majority of patients they treat. The competency is meant to demonstrate how the document can be applied during routine care to assist in clinical decision making, improve collaboration with the healthcare team, and provide excellent patient care. The AACPT Practice Committee will be working on another Laboratory Values Competency for more complex populations in the future.

This competency allows for acute care facilities to select questions which apply to the patient population and time constraints of their setting. An appendix at the end of the document has an answer key and supporting rationale for each question, allowing further discussion between practitioners. Each question is supported by the references used in the AACPT Laboratory Values Resource Guide. Understanding lab values is a critical work function. The intent of the competency is to close the gap, as well as assess knowledge and skills to promote better patient care outcomes.

The Competency Laboratory Values Interpretation Resource was approved by the Academy of Acute Care Board of Directors in January 2018. The document can be downloaded and accessed on the AACPT Store. The task force appreciates all who contributed their expertise to make this updated resource a reality for our members.
