Evidence-Based Practice

Using research to inform, improve, augment, and delineate your practice is the cornerstone of good practice.  Locating the best available evidence is one part of good evidence-based physical therapy practice.  The APTA librarians have compiled some straight forward tips to finding the best research evidence

If accessing databases is difficult for you, remember that your APTA membership includes full access to Open Door and Hooked on Evidence.  Use the links to the right to access these member services.  Get the most out of your membership, and be sure you use these valuable assets!

You may also want to check with your employer about any database or medical library access you may be entitled to.  Additionally, some university/college alumni associations allow library access with membership.  Be sure to check if the medical holdings will be appropriate for your needs.  Lastly, if you take students from a PT or PTA program, they may provide library access in exchange for your clinical instruction.

Conducting Research

Researchers may want to see (or suggest additions to) our Grants page.  Additionally, if you are a researcher looking to collaborate with acute care clinicians, consider posting a message to one of our Listservs to locate potential clinical sites or collaborators.

Publishing Research

Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy (JACPT)

Sharing research findings is imperative if the field is to grow and learn. The Acute Care Section publishes the peer-reviewed Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy (JACPT), and our Editorial Board is always looking to work with researchers to publish their findings.  Submission types and guidelines for authors, as well as contact information, is available on the JACPT Information for Authors webpage.

Combined Sections Meeting (CSM)

CSM also presents an opportunity for researchers to present their findings in a peer-reviewed venue.  Educational sessions, pre-conference courses, platforms, and posters are all peer-reviewed by members of the Education and/or Research Committees prior to acceptance at CSM. Find out more about CSM, including submission deadlines for proposals and abstracts, at www.apta.org/csm.

Check out the 2016 CSM Posters and Platform Presentations here.

NEXT Conference (APTA)

APTA's NEXT Conference (formerly called Annual Conference) is another opportunity to disseminate research.  Annual Conference accepts educational session proposals (including pre- and post- conference courses) and abstracts for poster presentations.  All sessions and posters are peer-reviewed by the Annual Conference Planning Committee. To check details and deadlines, please see the Annual Conference website at www.apta.org/NEXT.
