Those new to conferences or not familiar with conferences with large attendance (the most recent CSM had over 11,000 registered attendees!) may want to review the variety of sessions offered, along with some tips to ensure your CSM experience meets all of your expectations. Educational Sessions

Conference educational sessions occur during conference hours and are included in your registration fee. These sessions run over a variety of times, and are scheduled concurrently with other programming. You do not have to be a member of a section to attend its programming, and many sessions are co-sponsored by multiple sections.

Attendees do not sign up to attend educational sessions in advance, and room size is estimated by the section's CSM contact. Popular sessions fill quickly, so be sure to arrive a little early to ensure you have a seat.  Standing in the back of the room or sitting on the floor or aisles cannot be allowed due to fire regulations, and will not be tolerated.

Pre-conference courses or post-conference courses are outside of regular conference programming and are offered with an extra fee. Many pre- or post- conference courses will have a minimum registration required to run the course, and a maximum registration due to site requirements. It is imperative you sign up for pre- and/or post- conference courses within the published deadlines to ensure the course runs or to be sure you will be able to attend. Members can submit proposals for educational sessions (both pre-conference and conference sessions) through the CSM submission website. Educational session proposals include a brief course description with learning objectives; an outline of the educational session, including how the time requested will be covered and used; a list of current evidence and literature references applicable to the session's proposed content; and biographical/professional information of the presenter(s). The submission deadline is usually in April every year, and can be found on our website's calendar. The Education Committee is responsible for reviewing, scoring, accepting, and organizing the educational sessions presented at CSM each year.

Platform & Poster Presentations

A platform presentation is typically a short, research-based presentation lasting approximately 15 minutes with 5 minutes for audience questions.  Many presenters will cover their material over a set period of time, often around a topic or theme, to give attendees a brief, state-of-the-art take on that topic.

Poster presentations consist of creating a large poster explaining a research topic or case. Poster presenters are required to be available during certain exhibit hall hours to allow conference attendees to ask questions and learn more about the poster's content. The posters are usually placed in a portion of the exhibit hall, and are accessible for viewing during exhibit hall hours.

Members are encouraged to submit abstracts for acceptance as either a platform or poster presentation. The abstract is a short description of the research or case, and when submitting you can indicate your preference for poster or platform or either. All abstracts are submitted via the CSM submission website, and the deadline is usually in late May every year, and can be found on our calendar. The Research Committee reviews and blindly scores all abstracts submitted, and is responsible for accepting platforms and posters for presentation.

Business Meetings, Membership Meetings, and Social Events

All Section's and many Special Interest Groups have meetings or social events during CSM. Some of these are included in registration (for example, the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy's 'Wake Up and Celebrate Acute Care!' breakfast mixer is free) and some require registration and extra fees to attend. The networking opportunities at CSM are limitless, and we encourage members to attend our Membership Meeting and other social events to meet other therapists working in acute care!

Why CSM?

At the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy, our Education and Research Committees work together to invite, organize, review, and approve all of the pre-conference courses sponsored by the Academy, all the programming sponsored or co-sponsored by the Academy, and all of the Academy's platform and poster presentations. Why does this matter? Experts in acute care, researchers, educators, and clinicians in acute care make up these two committees. CSM attendees are guaranteed Academy programming at CSM that exemplifies the ideals of acute care physical therapy practice, and strives to recognize excellence and advancement in acute care.
