Mission
The mission of the Acute Care Section is to serve physical therapists and physical therapist assistants by recognizing and promoting excellence in acute care practice, thereby enhancing the physical health and functional abilities of patients/clients with acute care needs.
Vision
Acute care physical therapy, by 2020, is provided by physical therapists who are doctors of physical therapy and who may be board-certified specialists in acute care physical therapy. These physical therapists, as respected members of the health care team, are consulted for their expertise in patient management, including prevention and wellness, for patients with acute health care needs.
Consistent with APTA positions, these physical therapists may be assisted by physical therapist assistants in a team relationship. These physical therapist assistants may be recognized for advanced proficiency.
The Acute Care Section, including its journal and education programs, is recognized as the preeminent voice and resource for evidence-based practice in acute care physical therapy. The majority of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in acute care practice are members of the Acute Care Section-APTA.
